Dublin’s early town story is tied to the Sells family and the Scioto River. John Sells and surveyor John Shields laid out lots in 1810. Shields brought an Irish connection to the community’s name. Historic Dublin is a reminder that today’s growing city began with a much smaller settlement beside the river. Look at the older streets as a record of change rather than a place frozen in one year. The visitor bureau’s history offers a useful starting point for following that story.

The Dublin Link pedestrian bridge connects Historic Dublin with Bridge Park across the Scioto River. Riverside Crossing Park adds another reason to pause by the water. The two sides offer different streetscapes, with older buildings on one side and more recent development on the other. A crossing can be a way to notice both at walking speed. Check current public access and event notices before setting out, and follow posted signs.

A field of giant white corn can make you smile before it makes you think. At Frantz Park, Malcolm Cochran’s Field of Corn with Osage Orange Trees brings Dublin’s agricultural past into a landscape that has changed around it. The work contains one hundred nine upright ears, cast in concrete and arranged in rows. It was dedicated in nineteen ninety-four. The land was once farmed by Sam Frantz, known for his work with hybrid corn. The trees in the artwork’s title matter, too: their presence helped connect the artist’s idea to the site’s farming history. Look more closely at the ears. Three full-sized prototypes supplied different kernel patterns, and the finished pieces were rotated to create variety. What first seems like repetition rewards a second look. On a visit, try viewing the whole field and then one individual ear. The installation is playful, but it also asks what a growing community chooses to remember.

Dublin’s history reaches back far beyond its nineteenth-century village. Ferris-Wright Park preserves earthworks associated with the Hopewell culture: two circles and a square. These geometric spaces are evidence of Indigenous communities whose knowledge, ceremonies, and connections extended across a much wider world. The city explains that Hopewell is an archaeological name drawn from a later landowner’s family, not the name those ancient people necessarily used for themselves. The Wyandotte Nation continues to help guide interpretation of the park’s Indigenous history. A later chapter appears in the Ferris farmhouse, built in eighteen twenty and now used as an interpretive center. The earthworks and house belong to different periods; seeing them together makes the depth of this place easier to appreciate. Check the city’s tour and open-house schedule if you want to go inside. Follow marked routes and leave archaeological features undisturbed. A guided visit can help reveal what a quick glance across the grass might miss.

Near downtown Dublin, a short change of scene can take you from streets and storefronts to the sound of moving water. Indian Run Falls is one of the natural places that makes this part of the city distinctive. Visit Dublin identifies the park on Shawan Falls Drive and describes paths and bridges around the stream. Rather than treating the waterfall as a single photograph to collect, take time to notice the setting: the wooded corridor, the way the water moves, and the difference between the view from a bridge and an overlook. Flow and trail conditions can change with weather, so a visit will not look exactly like every picture online. Use the open paths and viewing areas, follow current signs, and avoid climbing over barriers for a closer view. This is a good story to pair with a downtown outing, while leaving room for a slower pace and a look at Dublin’s natural landscape.

Before Dublin became known for offices, neighborhoods, and busy shopping districts, farm households shaped much of its landscape. Coffman Homestead offers a way to look at that history through everyday life. The Dublin Historical Society dates construction of the two-story brick house to the years eighteen sixty-two through eighteen sixty-seven. Restored rooms contain furniture from the Coffman family and other Dublin families of the period. The barn’s agricultural tools tell another side of the story: keeping a household supplied depended on demanding work outside as well as inside. When you visit, consider a familiar task, such as preparing a meal, and imagine how many steps it required before modern conveniences. The property also includes an heirloom vegetable garden and a schoolroom exhibit. Check the Historical Society’s current tour arrangements before expecting the interiors to be open. A park visit and a house tour are different experiences, and planning ahead helps you get the one you want.

When looking at a town’s beginnings, it helps to think about the simplest daily need: water. Near the west end of Dublin’s stone road bridge over the Scioto, Dublin Spring connects that need with the early Sells settlement. The Dublin Historical Society describes the spring near the river’s edge and explains why ready access to water, transportation, farmland, and building materials made the surrounding area attractive to settlers. This is a smaller feature than the river or bridge, but it helps make the practical choices behind a settlement easier to understand. In nineteen ninety-one, Dublin Kiwanis improved the area with steps and a walkway. The spring once supplied drinking water; the Historical Society specifically says it is not safe to drink today. If you explore the area, follow current access signs and remember that steps and river conditions may affect your visit. Sometimes a town’s story is clearest in a place that is easy to overlook.
