Gahanna was founded by John Clark in 1849 along Big Walnut Creek. Nearby Bridgeport developed on the other side of Granville Street, and the two communities eventually merged under the Gahanna name. The city’s own history describes the rivalry and the later decision to join together. That story is a reminder that present-day boundaries and names were not inevitable. As you explore the creekside area, the waterway provides a connection between the early settlement and a downtown that continues to change.

At Creekside Park on Mill Street, the arboretum turns a walk into a chance to look more closely at trees. The city identifies more than forty species with placards describing their characteristics. Nearby Creekside Plaza is also a setting for community events and a starting point for downtown visits. Check the official calendar for scheduled activities, and follow current park signs. Even without a festival, reading a few tree labels can give a familiar path a different kind of interest.

Gahanna’s Herb Capital title has a person behind it. Jane, known as Bunnie, Geroux helped lead the effort that brought the state legislature’s designation in nineteen seventy-two. The city installed municipal gardens in nineteen seventy-five, and later dedicated them as the Geroux Herb Garden in two thousand two. What could have remained a slogan became a way to teach people about plants and their everyday uses. The Ohio Herb Center continues that educational connection in the historic Nafzger-Miller house on Mill Street, whose earliest portion dates to eighteen fifty-five. A visit can bring together gardening, cooking, fragrance, and the history of a familiar ingredient. Try beginning with an herb you already use in your kitchen and asking how it grows or how its uses have changed. Check the center’s current class calendar and visiting information before making plans. The larger story is about a resident’s interest becoming part of a community’s shared identity.

Friendship Park has a history that is easy to miss during an ordinary outing. The site was once home to Big Walnut Country Club, identified by the Gahanna Historical Society as one of the first African American country clubs in the United States. In the nineteen twenties, leaders from Columbus’s Black communities looked to rural Gahanna for a place to gather. The club offered recreation, athletics, conferences, and social connection. That range of purposes matters: a country club could be a place for civic relationships as well as leisure. After the club closed, much of its story faded from wider local memory. Historical Society research has helped bring its achievements and people back into view. Today, the site is the city’s Friendship Park on Oklahoma Avenue. Before or after your visit, explore the society’s historical timeline and founder profiles. They add names and context to the landscape, making a familiar park part of a much larger Central Ohio story.

The Log House on South High Street did not begin its life where you see it today. The Gahanna Historical Society dates its construction to eighteen forty, when David Shull built it for his bride a few miles outside the community. After passing through several owners, it fell out of use in the early twentieth century. Developers rediscovered the building in nineteen sixty-eight and moved it to the Historical Society settlement. Its furnished interior now interprets everyday life in this area during the mid-eighteen hundreds. The move is part of the story, rather than something to overlook: saving a building sometimes means finding it a new setting where people can learn from it. On a guided visit, consider the ordinary routines a small house had to accommodate, from preparing food to storing belongings and sharing space. Ask which features are original and which help interpret the period. Contact the Historical Society for current tour arrangements before planning to enter.

Gahanna Woods invites a different kind of outing from a busy creekside festival. The city describes a nature park and adjoining state nature preserve with meadows, wetlands, seasonal streams, and wooded paths. Dirt trails and wooden boardwalks lead into seasonal woodland swamps, where wildflowers, shrubs, and trees reward a slower look. Water is part of what gives this landscape its character. Rather than expecting every visit to look the same, notice the differences between seasons and weather conditions. A route that felt dry on one outing may be quite different on another. The park and preserve also have different rules: the city allows leashed dogs in the northern section, while pets are not permitted in the state nature preserve. Check current signs and the park information before choosing your route. Stay on designated paths and leave plants where they grow. A short, attentive walk can reveal a side of Gahanna that is easy to miss from the road.

The Creekside Blues and Jazz Festival began with a specific local occasion. First held in nineteen ninety-nine, it was a half-day celebration marking the opening of Creekside Park and the renewal of downtown Gahanna. Over time, that small beginning grew into a multiday gathering with music on several stages. The setting helped define its character: performances, food, and downtown businesses came together beside the creek. Presented by the local convention and visitors bureau, the festival also depends on sponsors and volunteer work that audiences may never see. Knowing that beginning gives a future visit another layer. You are taking part in a tradition that grew alongside a changing downtown.
