Worthington was settled in 1803 by families from Connecticut and Massachusetts. James Kilbourne helped organize the Scioto Company, which acquired land and planned the new community around a central public square. The settlement was named for Thomas Worthington. This deliberate layout helps explain why the village green remains so important to the city’s identity. The plan connected homes and commerce with places for education, religious life and public gathering. Today, the street pattern offers a visible starting point for exploring that earlier vision.

Worthington’s Village Green occupies the corners around High Street and State Route 161. Set aside in 1803, the green was once used by farmers bringing animals into town and is now a familiar place for community gatherings. Brick walkways and open lawn connect it with the surrounding streets. Cross only at designated crossings and pay attention to traffic at this busy intersection. The green is best understood as several connected public spaces rather than one isolated park.

A hair comb might seem an unlikely starting point for exploring Worthington history. But Orange Johnson, who bought this High Street property in 1816, was a hornsmith who specialized in making combs. The house helps connect that skilled trade with the life of a growing community. Its oldest portion was built by Arora Buttles in 1811. The historical society points to details such as the keeping room, steep staircase, and kitchen fireplace as evidence of early domestic life. Johnson later added a more formal Federal-style section, with an entrance facing the road now known as High Street. Together, the two parts offer a chance to compare changes in taste, space, and household life without leaving one property. The museum's interpretation includes comb-making tools and nineteenth-century hair combs, bringing the owner's work into the story. Before visiting, check the historical society's current tour and reservation arrangements. Once inside, look for the small practical details as well as the handsome architecture: both can tell you how people lived.

Most houses stay still while the neighborhood changes around them. Worthington's Old Rectory has a different story. Completed in 1845 for St. John's Episcopal Church, it originally stood beside the church near the Village Green. Over the next eighty years, fifteen rectors lived there. In 1924, the building moved to Hartford Street, where its later uses included rental housing and school administrative offices. Then, in 1978, the Worthington Historical Society acquired it and moved it again, to West New England Avenue. That second journey helped turn the former residence into a home for local history, including the society's offices, collections, and Doll Museum. Its Greek Revival design and interior woodwork also preserve a story about nineteenth-century craftsmanship. For visitors, the building offers two scales of discovery: the architecture of an entire house, and the smaller objects collected inside it. Check current museum hours and arrangements for research access before going. A building's address can change while much of its character, and its capacity to serve a community, survives.

Before many regional journeys were made by car, electric railways linked communities such as Columbus, Worthington, Delaware, and Marion. The Ohio Railway Museum preserves a connection to that world on part of the former Columbus, Delaware and Marion railway route. The museum traces its beginnings to enthusiasts who met at Columbus Union Station in 1945. By 1948, they had established the museum in Worthington. Their first artifact was Ohio Public Service interurban car number twenty-one, a reminder that preserving transportation history often begins with saving one vehicle. The collection grew to include streetcars, interurbans, locomotives, and other railway artifacts. The museum also emphasizes the volunteers whose work keeps its preservation mission going. For families, a visit can open a conversation about how people traveled before today's roads and routines. For residents, it connects a local site with a much larger Ohio network. In Rush Creek Village, the landscape is part of the architectural idea. The Worthington Historical Society describes a neighborhood inspired by the organic architecture associated with Frank Lloyd Wright, where homes respond to rolling ground, trees, ravines, and a brook. The designer was Theodore van Fossen, who planned the community and its original houses. Construction began in 1956 with the home of Martha and Richard Wakefield, who helped bring the neighborhood into being. The goal was more thoughtful than fitting a standard house onto any available lot. The relationship between building, materials, and setting mattered, as did the relationship between neighboring properties. This gives architecture enthusiasts a different chapter of Worthington history to explore alongside its earlier homes. It also offers a useful question for anyone: how does the place beneath a building influence its design? These are private residences, so appreciate the neighborhood from public areas and use announced tours when offered. The historical society's account is a good starting point for learning what makes the design distinctive.

Worthington's story reaches much farther back than the town established in 1803. Jeffers Mound is a surviving part of an Indigenous earthwork complex on a bluff overlooking the Olentangy River. The Worthington Historical Society describes the earthworks as likely built by people associated with the Hopewell culture between about one hundred B.C. and A.D. four hundred. Early surveys recorded a much larger arrangement of enclosures and mounds covering roughly eight acres. Archaeological investigations have added evidence about structures and activity at the site, while leaving important questions about its use open. The surviving mound entered the historical society's care in 1974 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places that year. A visit invites you to imagine the wider landscape that once surrounded this remaining earthwork, and to recognize the skill and organization of its builders. Treat the site and neighboring homes respectfully. The historical society specifically asks visitors to stay off the mound because its surface is easily eroded. Preservation allows this ancient place to remain part of Worthington's future.
